Thistle is a common name for a plant with leaves having sharp prickles on them. These plants evolved to having these prickles as protection from animals, to discourage them from eating the plant. Although what I also find fascinating is that "Thistle" is also a Celtic Symbol for Nobility of Character, as well as, for anyone who seeks to cause you harm, a Thistle yields punishment.
